Description

Febuxostat 40/Goustat 40 contains Febuxostat, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzyme responsible for producing uric acid, helping to reduce blood uric acid levels and prevent gout flare-ups.

  • Take the tablet at the same time every day.
  • Drink 2–3 liters of water daily unless otherwise advised by your doctor.
  • Avoid alcohol and foods high in purines, as they may trigger gout attacks.
  • Continue the medication even if symptoms improve.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you develop a rash, fever, swelling, or breathing difficulty.

Goustat 40 is prescribed for the long-term treatment and prevention of gout by lowering high uric acid levels in the blood (hyperuricemia). Reducing uric acid helps prevent the formation of crystals in the joints, thereby lowering the risk of painful gout attacks.

  • Take Goustat 40 exactly as directed by your physician.
  • It can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break it.
  • Continue taking the medicine even if you are symptom-free, as stopping treatment may worsen gout.

Missed Dose

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together.

Drug Interactions

Goustat 40 should not be used with:

  • Azathioprine
  • Mercaptopurine
  • Theophylline

These medicines may interact with Febuxostat and increase the risk of serious side effects.

Contraindications

Do not use Goustat 40 if you:

  • Are taking azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline.
  • Are allergic to Febuxostat or any ingredient in the medicine.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Skin rash
  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Temporary increase in gout attacks when treatment begins

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or persistent signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe nausea).

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

  • The safety of Febuxostat during pregnancy has not been established; it should be used only if clearly needed.
  • It is unknown whether the medicine passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before use.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Gout attacks may temporarily increase during the first few months of treatment. Do not stop taking the medicine during an acute attack unless advised by your doctor.
  • Patients with existing cardiovascular disease should discuss the risks and benefits with their healthcare provider.
  • Use with caution in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment.
  • Regular monitoring of liver function and serum uric acid levels may be required.
  • Drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol intake can help reduce gout flare-ups.
