Milk thistle, native to Europe and introduced to North America by early settlers, now thrives in various regions worldwide, including the eastern United States, California, South America, Africa, Australia, and Asia. Both the above-ground parts and seeds of the milk thistle plant are utilized for medicinal purposes.
Primarily taken orally, milk thistle is commonly used for liver disorders. It is employed to address liver damage stemming from various sources, such as exposure to chemicals, alcohol consumption, and chemotherapy. Additionally, it is used for liver damage caused by Amanita mushroom poisoning, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic inflammatory liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver, and chronic hepatitis.
