Imagin tablets are indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Clinical studies have shown the promising efficacy of Imagin both as a monotherapy and in combination therapies, with an acceptable safety profile.
Imagin (Imeglimin) works through dual mechanisms:
- Amplification of Glucose-Stimulated Insulin Secretion (GSIS) and preservation of β-cell mass.
- Enhanced Insulin Action, which may include inhibition of hepatic glucose output and improvement in insulin signaling in both the liver and skeletal muscles.
At a cellular level, Imeglimin targets mitochondrial dysfunction, a common factor in the development of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). It helps correct mitochondrial activity, reduces oxidative stress by lowering reactive oxygen species (ROS), and prevents mitochondrial cell death. Imeglimin enhances glucose-stimulated ATP production and increases NAD+ synthesis, further improving insulin action and glucose handling. It has been shown to preserve β-cell mass in rodents with T2D.
This unique mechanism distinguishes Imagin from other diabetes medications like biguanides, sulfonylureas, and GLP-1 receptor agonists.
