Insimet contains Metformin, a biguanide-class oral antihyperglycemic agent used for controlling type 2 diabetes. Unlike sulfonylureas, it does not usually cause hypoglycemia.
Metformin works through several mechanisms:
- Reduces glucose production in the liver
- Decreases intestinal absorption of glucose
- Improves insulin sensitivity and enhances peripheral glucose uptake and utilization
As a result, it lowers both fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels effectively.
Insimet Tablet is prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in overweight individuals whose blood glucose levels are not adequately controlled through diet and physical activity alone.
- In adults, it may be used alone or together with other oral antidiabetic medicines or insulin.
- In children aged 10 years and above and adolescents, it may be used alone or alongside insulin therapy.
- Metformin therapy has also been shown to reduce diabetes-related complications in overweight adults with type 2 diabetes when used as first-line treatment after lifestyle measures fail.
