Description

Itraconazole is used for treating:

  • Superficial fungal infections:
    • Oropharyngeal candidiasis
    • Vulvovaginal candidiasis
    • Pityriasis versicolor
    • Tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea manuum
    • Onychomycosis (fungal nail infections)
  • Systemic fungal infections:
    • Systemic candidiasis
    • Aspergillosis
    • Cryptococcosis (including cryptococcal meningitis)
    • Histoplasmosis
  • Other Uses:
    • Maintenance therapy in AIDS patients to prevent fungal infection relapse
    • Prevention of fungal infections during prolonged neutropenia

Itraconazole works by inhibiting Cytochrome P-450 enzymes, disrupting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This leads to increased permeability, impaired enzyme activity, and ultimately fungal cell death.
