Mercaptopurine:
A purine antagonist that is intracellularly converted into active nucleotides, such as thioinosinic acid. These nucleotides interfere with nucleic acid synthesis, inhibiting RNA and DNA formation, which disrupts the growth of rapidly dividing cells.

  • Pregnancy (Category D): Evidence of fetal risk; use only if benefits outweigh risks (e.g., life-threatening conditions).
  • Lactation: Contraindicated due to potential risk to the infant.
