Levofloxacin, a third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, exhibits potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative ocular pathogens. It acts by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination — thereby halting bacterial growth and leading to cell death.
- Lifcin Eye Drops are indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of the following organisms:
- Aerobic Gram-positive bacteria:
Corynebacterium spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus (Groups C/F), Streptococcus (Group G), and Streptococcus viridans group. - Aerobic Gram-negative bacteria:
Acinetobacter lwoffii, Haemophilus influenzae, and Serratia marcescens. - Lifcin is also effective in the management of other ocular infections such as bacterial corneal ulcers, blepharitis, hordeolum, and for perioperative prophylaxis.
