Description

Lornoxicam belongs to the oxicam group of NSAIDs. It works mainly by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which reduces the production of prostaglandins responsible for pain and inflammation. This helps decrease pain, swelling, and inflammation in affected joints and tissues.

Loxodol contains lornoxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the short-term management of acute pain and for relieving pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The dose should be individualized according to the condition and response to treatment.

Acute pain

  • 8–16 mg daily, divided into 2 or 3 doses
  • Maximum recommended daily dose: 16 mg

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

  • Initial dose: 12 mg daily, divided into 2 or 3 doses
  • Maintenance dose should not exceed 16 mg daily

Children and adolescents

Lornoxicam is not recommended for individuals below 18 years because adequate safety and efficacy data are not available.

Elderly patients

No routine dose adjustment is generally required in patients over 65 years. However, extra caution is advised because older adults may be more susceptible to gastrointestinal complications.

Renal impairment

For mild to moderate kidney impairment, the maximum recommended dose is 12 mg daily, divided into 2 or 3 doses.

Hepatic impairment

For moderate liver impairment, the maximum recommended dose is 12 mg daily, divided into 2 or 3 doses.

The lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration should be used to reduce the risk of adverse effects.

Drug Interactions

Loxodol may interact with several medicines, including:

  • Warfarin and other vitamin K antagonists: May increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Cyclosporine: May increase the risk of kidney impairment or acute kidney injury.
  • Lithium: Lornoxicam may increase lithium levels and toxicity.
  • Methotrexate: May increase methotrexate-related adverse effects.
  • Digoxin: May increase digoxin exposure.
  • Diuretics: Their effects may be reduced, and kidney function may be affected.
  • ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs): Their blood-pressure-lowering effect may be reduced, particularly in patients with heart failure.

Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements you use before starting Loxodol.

Contraindications

Loxodol should not be used in patients with:

  • Allergy or hypersensitivity to lornoxicam or its ingredients
  • Active or previous peptic ulcer disease
  • Severe liver impairment
  • Severe kidney impairment
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Pregnancy, particularly the third trimester

Side Effects

NSAIDs such as lornoxicam can commonly cause gastrointestinal side effects, including:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Flatulence
  • Indigestion
  • Abdominal pain
  • Gastric or peptic ulcers
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Black, tarry stools (melena)
  • Vomiting blood (hematemesis)
  • Ulcerative stomatitis
  • Worsening of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease

Serious gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, or perforation can occur and may occasionally be life-threatening, particularly in older adults.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Lornoxicam should not be used during pregnancy unless specifically advised by a doctor and is contraindicated during the third trimester. It should also be avoided during labor and delivery.

There is insufficient information regarding the presence of lornoxicam in human breast milk. Because animal studies indicate significant transfer into milk, breastfeeding women should not use lornoxicam unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.

Precautions & Warnings

Use Loxodol cautiously if you have:

  • Kidney problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart failure
  • A history of stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
  • A bleeding disorder or tendency to bleed
  • Asthma
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • Fertility problems or are receiving treatment for infertility

Avoid taking more than the prescribed dose. Prolonged or high-dose NSAID use can increase the risk of gastrointestinal, kidney, and cardiovascular complications.

Overdose

Taking more Loxodol than prescribed may cause:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Visual disturbances
  • Other central nervous system symptoms

If an overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention. There is no specific antidote for lornoxicam. Treatment is generally supportive.

Therapeutic Class
