Esomeprazole works by blocking the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in stomach lining cells. This significantly reduces acid secretion and allows damaged tissues in the digestive tract to heal. As the active S-isomer of omeprazole, esomeprazole provides effective and prolonged acid suppression.
Maxima contains esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid production. It is prescribed for:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic heartburn
- Healing erosive esophagitis (damage to the food pipe caused by acid reflux)
- Maintaining healing of erosive esophagitis
- Eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection when used with amoxicillin and clarithromycin
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Acid-related indigestion (dyspepsia)
- Duodenal and gastric ulcers
