Studies have shown that using metformin as a first-line treatment in overweight adults with type 2 diabetes helps reduce diabetes-related complications.
Note: Always use medication as per the advice of a registered physician.
Metformin, a biguanide-class oral antihyperglycemic drug, helps manage type 2 diabetes by lowering both fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels. Unlike sulfonylureas, it does not induce hypoglycemia. Its mode of action includes:
- Reducing glucose production in the liver.
- Decreasing glucose absorption in the intestines.
- Enhancing insulin sensitivity, leading to better glucose uptake and utilization in peripheral tissues.
