Hydrocortisone 1% + Miconazole Nitrate 2% is used topically for treating inflamed skin conditions (dermatoses) where both infection and inflammation are present. These include:
- Eczema and dermatitis (moist or dry), such as atopic eczema, contact dermatitis (irritant or allergic), and seborrheic eczema (including cases associated with acne)
- Intertrigo and other intertriginous conditions, including inflammation in skin folds, perianal, and genital dermatitis
Miconazole is effective against dermatophytes, pathogenic yeasts like Candida spp., and many Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus and Streptococcus strains.
Miconazole belongs to the imidazole class of antifungal agents and works by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, which disrupts fungal cell membrane integrity, leading to cell death. It is active against a range of fungi, including Candida, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Pseudallescheria boydii, along with certain Gram-positive bacteria.
Hydrocortisone is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring glucocorticoid. It exerts anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, antifungal, and vasoconstrictive effects. When applied topically, it penetrates skin cells and blocks the release of substances responsible for inflammation, thus reducing swelling, redness, and itching.
