Moxigen is indicated for the treatment of:
- Acute bacterial sinusitis
- Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
Moxifloxacin is a 4th generation synthetic broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibacterial drug. It acts by inhibiting:
- Topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase)
- Topoisomerase IV, necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair.
Dosage & Administration
- Acute bacterial sinusitis: 400 mg once daily for 7-10 days.
- Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 400 mg once daily for 5-10 days.
- Community-acquired pneumonia: 400 mg once daily for 7-14 days.
- Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections: 400 mg once daily for 7 days.
- Complicated skin and skin structure infections: 400 mg once daily for 7-21 days.
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections: 400 mg once daily for 5-14 days.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease: 400 mg once daily for 14 days.
Interaction
- Decreased absorption: When administered with antacids, sucralfate, multivitamins, and multivalent cations (e.g., iron or zinc).
- Enhanced risks: Concomitant use with NSAIDs may increase the risk of convulsions, and with warfarin may increase bleeding risk.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones.
Side Effects
- Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C: Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
- Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture; discontinue if tendon pain or inflammation occurs.
- Avoid in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval, uncorrected hypokalemia, and those receiving Class IA or Class III antiarrhythmic agents.
Use in Special Populations
- Renal or hepatic impaired patients: No dose adjustment necessary.
- Pediatric patients: Safety and effectiveness not established in patients under 18 years.
Therapeutic Class
- 4-Quinolone preparations.

- Store in a dry place, protected from light and heat.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
