Vitamin B1 (thiamine) plays an important role in energy production and normal nerve function. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) contributes to red blood cell formation, protein metabolism, and the production of neurotransmitters. Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is essential for cell formation, red blood cell production, and maintaining healthy nerves.
These vitamins are well absorbed after oral administration and are distributed throughout the body. Thiamine is not stored in significant amounts and excess amounts are mainly eliminated through urine. Vitamin B6 is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and converted into its active forms, which are stored mainly in the liver and metabolized before being excreted in urine.
N-Bion is a combination of vitamins B1, B6, and B12 used when there is a deficiency of these vitamins. It may be prescribed as supportive treatment for various nerve-related conditions, including:
- Polyneuropathy, including diabetic, alcoholic, or toxic neuropathy
- Neuritis and neuralgia
- Cervical syndrome
- Shoulder-arm syndrome
- Lumbago and sciatica
- Myalgia
- Intercostal neuralgia
- Herpes zoster-associated nerve pain
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Supportive treatment of facial nerve palsy
Composition
Each film-coated tablet contains:
- Vitamin B1 (Thiamine Mononitrate) — 100 mg
- Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride) — 200 mg
- Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) — 200 mcg
Tablet:
The usual dose is 1–3 tablets daily, or as directed by the physician.
Children:
There is insufficient information regarding the safety and appropriate use of this medicine in children.
Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions have been reported. However, vitamin B6 may interfere with the action of levodopa when levodopa is used without a peripheral dopa-decarboxylase inhibitor.
Contraindications
N-Bion should not be used in patients who:
- Are allergic or hypersensitive to any of its ingredients
- Are receiving levodopa therapy without an appropriate peripheral dopa-decarboxylase inhibitor
Side Effects
N-Bion is generally well tolerated. However, allergic or hypersensitivity reactions may occur in some individuals.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The oral tablet formulation is generally preferred during pregnancy and breastfeeding when supplementation is clinically necessary. The injection formulation may contain benzyl alcohol and should therefore be avoided during pregnancy and lactation unless specifically advised by a physician.
Precautions & Warnings
- Use N-Bion only as directed by a healthcare professional.
- Cyanocobalamin should be used cautiously or avoided in certain neurological conditions such as subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord, according to the underlying cause.
- Prolonged or excessive intake of vitamin B6 can itself cause nerve-related symptoms; therefore, do not exceed the recommended dose without medical supervision.
Overdose
At recommended doses, significant overdose-related problems are not generally expected. If an excessive amount is taken, treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, with medical assessment when necessary.
