Neocin (Bacitracin Zinc + Neomycin Sulphate) is recommended for the topical management of bacterial skin infections, particularly effective in:
- Atopic dermatitis
- Contact dermatitis
- Neurodermatitis
- Eczema (including eczematoid and stasis eczema)
- Anogenital pruritus
It may also serve as an adjunct therapy for pyodermas such as impetigo, when used alongside systemic antibiotics.
Bacitracin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is effective against many Gram-positive organisms (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, Clostridium) and some Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., Neisseria, H. influenzae).
Neomycin, an aminoglycoside, disrupts bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. It is active against various Gram-negative aerobes and some staphylococcal strains.
Together, they offer broad-spectrum topical antibacterial action, often used in combination for enhanced efficacy.
