Glutathione is a crucial antioxidant in your body, helping to neutralize free radicals—unstable molecules that can harm your cells. It was once believed that the body couldn’t absorb glutathione from supplements, but recent studies indicate otherwise. Glutathione’s molecular structure allows for increased blood levels when taken orally, with clinical trials showing significant absorption of this nutrient.
Glutathione supports key components of immune function, including gastrointestinal cells, mitochondria, and immune cell efficiency. Damage to the small intestine’s lining can increase permeability and allow bacteria to cross into tissues, triggering immune responses and autoimmunity. This damage partly results from the inability to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), which glutathione helps mitigate.
A 2017 study in the World Journal of Gastroenterology found that oral glutathione supplementation could restore tissue levels and support ROS metabolism, reducing tissue damage.
Glutathione also protects mitochondria from free radical damage during ATP production, ensuring efficient energy generation without cellular harm. Mitochondrial health is critical for immune functions like T-cell activity and ATP-dependent processes. Decreased glutathione levels in immune cells, such as T-lymphocytes, are observed in individuals with immune challenges, suggesting compromised immunity.
Antioxidant properties of glutathione enhance immune function by maintaining and regulating immune responses, including lymphocyte activation and natural killer (NK) cell activity. In one study, participants taking 1,000 mg of Setria® glutathione daily for three months showed more than double the NK cell cytotoxicity compared to baseline.
