Description

Indications

Indications for Ketotifen eye drops include allergic conjunctivitis, vernal kerato-conjunctivitis, vernal-keratitis, blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis.

Pharmacology

A potent anti-allergic drug, ketotifen blocks histamine (H1) receptors in a non-competitive manner for a long period of time. When cells responsible for type-(I) allergic reactions emit mediators (such as H1 histamine, leukotriene, and prostaglandins), Ketotifen blocks the production of these mediators. As well as stabilizing mast cells, Ketotifen reduces chemotaxis and activates eosinophil degranulation.

Dosage & Administration

Adults and children 3 years and older: 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily, every 8-12 hours, not more than twice per day.

Children under 3 years of age: Consult with a doctor.

Interaction

Sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols may be amplified by ketotifen. A reversible decrease in platelet count has been documented in a few patients taking Tifen with oral antidiabetic medications, leading to the recommendation that this combination be avoided.

Contraindications

A reversible drop in platelet count has been noted in a few patients taking Ketotifen with an oral antidiabetic medication, leading to the recommendation that this combination be avoided. Despite the lack of evidence of a teratogenic impact, Ketotifen is not recommended during pregnancy or when breastfeeding is not possible.

Side Effects

Drowsiness and in isolated cases, dry mouth and slight dizziness may occur at the beginning of treatment but usually disappear spontaneously after a few days.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnant women who use ketotifen eye drops have not been adequately studied. Eye drops have substantially lower systemic concentrations than oral medications. Pregnant ladies should be treated with caution. When administered topically to humans, it is unlikely to create detectable amounts in breast milk. A 0.25 percent eye drop of ketotifen can be administered during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

While wearing soft contact lenses, the patient should not be infused with Ketotifen eye drops that contain benzalkonium chloride, a preservative that can deposit on soft contact lenses. It is recommended that the lenses be removed before to applying the drops, and that they not be reinserted for at least 15 minutes following use.
