Olmedip contains two active components: amlodipine and olmesartan medoxomil.
- Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that inhibits calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac cells. It primarily acts on blood vessels, causing relaxation of arterial smooth muscle, which reduces peripheral resistance and lowers blood pressure.
- Olmesartan medoxomil is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It selectively blocks the AT1 receptor, preventing angiotensin II from producing vasoconstriction and aldosterone release. Unlike ACE inhibitors, it does not affect bradykinin metabolism.
Together, these agents produce complementary blood pressure–lowering effects.
Olmedip is used for the management of high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive medicines. It may be prescribed as initial therapy in patients who are likely to require more than one drug to achieve the target blood pressure. The choice of starting with combination therapy depends on individual factors such as baseline blood pressure, treatment goals, and the likelihood of achieving control with single or multiple agents. Blood pressure targets may vary depending on a patient’s overall cardiovascular risk.
