Ondason is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist used for:
- Prevention of nausea and vomiting during initial and repeated courses of emetogenic cancer chemotherapy.
- Prevention and treatment of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV).
- Prevention of radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
Ondason oral soluble film is designed to dissolve on the tongue within 20 seconds, after which it is swallowed with saliva—no water is needed. The active ingredient, Ondason base, is the racemic form of Ondason and acts by selectively blocking serotonin 5-HT3 receptors. The chemical formula is C18H19N3O, with a molecular weight of 293.3.
Ondansetron is a potent and highly selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. While the exact mechanism in controlling nausea and vomiting is not fully understood, chemotherapy and radiotherapy can release serotonin (5-HT) in the small intestine, activating vagal nerves via 5-HT3 receptors and triggering the vomiting reflex. Ondansetron blocks these receptors both in the gut and in the central nervous system, preventing this reflex.
