Description

Capsule Manufacturer/Distributor: Renata Limited Generic Name: Cefixime 400 mg Capsule

Orcef is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for various acute infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including upper respiratory tract infections (such as otitis media), lower respiratory tract infections (like bronchitis), and urinary tract infections (including cystitis, cystourethritis, and pyelonephritis). It exhibits bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Cefixime, the active ingredient in Orcef, interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis, making it highly stable against beta-lactamase enzymes. This stability extends its efficacy against organisms resistant to other antibiotics. Orcef is generally well-tolerated, with common side effects including gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain), headache, dizziness, and hypersensitivity reactions like rash and itching.

Dosage and administration depend on the severity of the infection and patient age. For adults and children over 10 years, the usual dosage ranges from 200-400 mg daily for 7-14 days. Dosage adjustments are necessary in patients with renal impairment. Orcef should be administered with caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs, penicillin-sensitive patients, and those with markedly impaired renal function.

Use of Orcef during pregnancy and lactation should be considered only if clearly needed, as there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, and its excretion in human milk is not well-established. Overdose effects may require gastric lavage, but no specific antidote exists. Storage instructions include keeping it below 30ºC, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children.
