Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that targets the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cells. By irreversibly binding to the enzyme, it blocks the final step in gastric acid production, reducing both basal and stimulated acid secretion for more than 24 hours.
Pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), is effective in conditions requiring suppression of gastric acid secretion. It is indicated for:
- Peptic Ulcer Disease: Both gastric and duodenal ulcers.
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Especially in patients with associated erosive esophagitis.
- NSAID-Associated Ulceration: Prevents and treats ulcers caused by prolonged NSAID use.
- Helicobacter pylori Eradication: Used in combination with antibiotics to treat ulcers associated with H. pylori infection.
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: A condition characterized by excessive gastric acid production.
