Description

Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that blocks the final step of gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cells. It suppresses both basal and stimulated gastric acid production.

Pantoprazole is prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Peptic ulcer disease (gastric and duodenal ulcers)
  • Helicobacter pylori infection (in combination therapy)
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other pathological hypersecretory conditions
  • Oesophagitis
  • Acid-related dyspepsia
  • NSAID-associated ulceration
  • Ulcers resistant to H2 receptor antagonists
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding related to stress
  • Prophylaxis of acid aspiration during induction of anesthesia
