Polysaccharide Pneumococcal Vaccine –
- Adults and children ≥2 years: A single 0.5 mL dose administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously.
- Not recommended for children under 2 years due to limited immune response.
- Ideally administer the vaccine at least 2 weeks before elective splenectomy or starting immunosuppressive treatments such as chemotherapy.
- Delay vaccination during active chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Resume no earlier than 3 months post-treatment, though longer intervals may be required for certain patients.
- Patients with HIV (symptomatic or asymptomatic) should receive the vaccine as early as possible after diagnosis.
Each 0.5 mL dose of the vaccine contains 25 micrograms of purified capsular polysaccharides from the following 23 pneumococcal serotypes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18C, 19F, 19A, 20, 22F, 23F, and 33F.
This vaccine is recommended for the active immunization of individuals 2 years of age and older, including children, adolescents, and adults, to help protect against pneumococcal disease.
The vaccine is formulated using purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 pneumococcal serotypes that are responsible for approximately 90% of invasive pneumococcal infections. The antigens stimulate an immune response, leading to the production of antibodies that protect against pneumococcal disease.
