Coenzyme Q10, also known as Ubidecarenone, is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance found in all cells of the body. It plays a critical role in the electron transport chain of mitochondria, essential for energy production (ATP synthesis).
The highest concentrations of Coenzyme Q10 are found in tissues with high metabolic activity, such as the heart, skeletal muscles, liver, and brain. Its production naturally declines with age, contributing to aging and related health conditions.
Being lipophilic, Coenzyme Q10 is better absorbed when taken with high-fat meals. After oral intake, it is absorbed in the small intestine, metabolized in the liver, and distributed to tissues. About 60% of the dose is eliminated via feces, primarily through bile.
