Rovantin contains Cefpodoxime, a third-generation oral cephalosporin with strong resistance to beta-lactamases and effective action against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. As a prodrug, it is metabolized into its active form, Cefpodoxime, which works against a broad range of bacteria.
- Excretion: About 29-33% of the drug is excreted unchanged via urine within 12 hours.
- Stability: Highly stable in the presence of β-lactamase enzymes, making it more effective against Gram-positive bacteria than other third-generation cephalosporins.
- Susceptible Organisms: Includes S. aureus, S. saprophyticus, S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, N. gonorrhoeae, P. mirabilis, and others.
Rovantin is prescribed for infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including:
- Ear Infections (Acute Otitis Media): Caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis (including beta-lactamase-producing strains).
- Throat Infections (Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis): Due to Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Sinus Infections (Acute Maxillary Sinusitis): Caused by H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae, and M. catarrhalis (including beta-lactamase-producing strains).
- Community-Acquired Pneumonia: Due to S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae (including beta-lactamase-producing strains).
- Chronic Bronchitis Exacerbations: Caused by S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae (non-beta-lactamase-producing strains), and M. catarrhalis.
- Skin & Soft Tissue Infections: Caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Due to E. coli, K. pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus.
- Uncomplicated Gonorrhea & Rectal Gonococcal Infections in Women: Caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae (including penicillinase-producing strains).
