Teviral 0.5 (Entecavir 0.5 mg)
Therapeutic Class: Antiviral agent (Nucleoside analogue)
- Chronic Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection in adults and children ≥2 years with evidence of active viral replication and either:
- Persistent elevation in serum aminotransferases (ALT/AST), or
- Histologically active disease
- HIV infection (as part of combination therapy, but not recommended as monotherapy for HIV).
Pregnancy: Limited human data; insufficient to assess teratogenic risk. Animal studies showed entecavir in breast milk. Use only if benefit outweighs risk.
Lactation: Unknown if excreted in human milk; not recommended while breastfeeding.
- Entecavir selectively inhibits HBV DNA polymerase, blocking reverse transcriptase activity.
- This suppresses viral DNA synthesis, thereby reducing HBV replication.
- It is not a cure for HBV or HIV, but helps to lower viral load and improve liver health/lifespan.
