Tevirax is prescribed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults with compensated liver disease.
Tevirax is a nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It works as follows:
- Tevirax enters liver cells (hepatocytes) via passive diffusion and specific transporters (OATP1B1, OATP1B3).
- Inside the cells, it is converted into tenofovir, which is then phosphorylated to its active form, tenofovir diphosphate.
- Tenofovir diphosphate blocks HBV replication by terminating viral DNA chains, preventing the virus from multiplying.
It has minimal effect on human DNA polymerases, including mitochondrial DNA polymerase γ, so mitochondrial toxicity is unlikely.
