Tirzepatide is a dual receptor agonist that activates both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptors. It’s a modified 39-amino-acid peptide with a fatty acid chain (C20) that allows for albumin binding, extending its duration of action.
Mechanism of action:
- Stimulates insulin secretion (both first and second phases)
- Lowers glucagon levels, both in a glucose-dependent way
