Tricalm (Trihexyphenidyl Hydrochloride) Tablet
- Used as an adjunct therapy in all forms of Parkinsonism (idiopathic, postencephalitic, arteriosclerotic).
- Often combined with levodopa for enhanced symptom control.
- Effective in managing extrapyramidal disorders caused by antipsychotic/centrally acting drugs such as phenothiazines, thioxanthenes, dibenzoxazepines, and butyrophenones.
Tricalm acts primarily as a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist (anticholinergic).
- Central effect: Higher affinity for M1 receptors in the brain → improves dopamine transmission in the striatum.
- Peripheral effect: Inhibits parasympathetic activity and relaxes smooth muscles.
May indirectly enhance dopamine release, reducing tremors, rigidity, and motor dysfunctions in Parkinson’s disease.
