Xcel contains Paracetamol (Acetaminophen), a widely used analgesic and antipyretic. Its actions include:
- Analgesic Effect: Blocks pain signals peripherally and increases pain threshold in the central nervous system.
- Antipyretic Effect: Acts on the hypothalamus to regulate body temperature, promoting heat loss through vasodilation and sweating.
Paracetamol inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes in the CNS (including COX-1, COX-2, and the COX-3 variant), reducing prostaglandin synthesis and thus controlling pain and fever.
Unlike NSAIDs, it does not significantly inhibit COX in peripheral tissues, giving it minimal anti-inflammatory effects.
It is less effective in tissues with high peroxide levels, which explains its central activity and limited effect on platelets or immune cells.
