Zapenia is prescribed for:
- Treatment-resistant schizophrenia in patients who do not respond to or cannot tolerate conventional antipsychotics.
- Managing psychosis associated with Parkinson’s disease.
Clozapine belongs to the atypical antipsychotic class and has a unique receptor binding profile. It interacts with dopamine receptors (D1, D2, D3, D5) but shows higher selectivity for D4 receptors, which may explain its reduced risk of extrapyramidal side effects. It also blocks adrenergic, cholinergic, histaminergic, and serotonergic receptors, contributing to its broad pharmacologic action.
