Breast cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the cells of the breast and is often stimulated by the female sex hormone, estrogen. It can develop in different parts of the breast, including:
- Lobules: Milk-producing glands.
- Ducts: Pathways that carry milk from the lobules to the nipple.
- Fatty or fibrous connective tissue: Supporting tissue within the breast.
Tumor cells in the breast can:
- Invade surrounding healthy breast tissue.
- Travel to the lymph nodes, which serve as primary pathways for cancer cells to spread to other areas of the body.
Signs to watch for include:
- Lump or tissue thickening in the breast that feels different from surrounding tissues.
- Breast pain or tenderness.
- Redness or swelling of the breast.
- Nipple discharge that is not breast milk, including bloody discharge.
- Changes in breast shape, size, or appearance that cannot be explained.
- Peeling, flaking, or scaling of the skin on the breast or nipple.
- Lump or swelling under the arm (in the lymph nodes).
Timely identification of symptoms and medical evaluation can significantly improve treatment outcomes. If you notice any of these signs, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
