Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin lowers plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, a key enzyme involved in hepatic cholesterol synthesis. It also increases hepatic LDL receptor expression, enhancing LDL uptake and clearance from the bloodstream while reducing LDL particle production.
Ezetimibe
Ezetimibe decreases serum cholesterol by selectively inhibiting intestinal cholesterol absorption. It targets the Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) transporter in the small intestine, reducing the delivery of dietary and biliary cholesterol to the liver. This results in reduced hepatic cholesterol stores and increased clearance of circulating cholesterol.
This mechanism is complementary to statins and does not affect hepatic cholesterol synthesis, bile acid excretion, or fat-soluble vitamin levels.
Lipid-modifying therapy should be considered as part of a comprehensive cardiovascular risk-reduction strategy in patients with a significantly increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. Pharmacological treatment is recommended as an adjunct to dietary modification and lifestyle interventions when non-drug measures alone fail to achieve adequate lipid control.
Primary Hyperlipidemia
Xerova EZ Tablet is indicated to reduce elevated levels of:
- Total cholesterol (Total-C)
- Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)
- Apolipoprotein B (Apo-B)
- Triglycerides (TG)
Non-HDL cholesterol
It also helps increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in patients with primary (heterozygous familial and non-familial) hyperlipidemia or mixed dyslipidemia.
Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH)
Xerova EZ Tablet is indicated to lower total cholesterol and LDL-C in patients with HoFH, either as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering therapies (such as LDL apheresis) or when such therapies are unavailable.
