Ramipril, an ACE inhibitor, is converted to its active metabolite ramiprilat, which blocks the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II — a potent vasoconstrictor. This action leads to vasodilation, reduced aldosterone secretion, and lower blood pressure. It also provides cardioprotective and renoprotective effects, making it useful in long-term cardiovascular management.
R-Pil is indicated for:
- Management of hypertension, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
- Treatment of congestive heart failure, with or without diuretics.
- Management of post-myocardial infarction heart failure in patients showing clinical signs within the first few days of an acute event.
- Treatment of diabetic and non-diabetic nephropathy (incipient or overt).
- Prevention of major cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, or cardiovascular death in patients at increased cardiovascular risk (e.g., with coronary artery disease, diabetes with additional risk factors, history of stroke or peripheral vascular disease).
