Hi-D IM Injection is used for the prevention and treatment of conditions associated with Vitamin D deficiency, including:
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Osteoporosis
- Osteomalacia
- Rickets
- Hypoparathyroidism
- Pseudohypoparathyroidism
- Familial hypophosphatemia

Generic Name: Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3)
This medicine may be taken with or without food. It can be administered orally or by intramuscular (IM) injection as directed by a healthcare professional.
Adult Dosage
Vitamin D Deficiency / Nutritional Supplementation
- Oral or IM: 200–400 IU (1–2 mL) daily, or as prescribed by a physician.
Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment (Adults over 50 years)
- 800–1,000 IU (20–25 mcg) daily, usually in combination with calcium supplements.
- May also be administered by IM injection when appropriate.
Hypoparathyroidism
- 50,000–200,000 IU daily, generally alongside calcium supplementation.
- IM administration may be used based on clinical requirements.
Pediatric Dosage
Nutritional Supplementation
- Infants (0–12 months): 400 IU (10 mcg) once daily.
- Children and adolescents (1–18 years): 600 IU (15 mcg) once daily.
Vitamin D-Resistant Rickets
- 12,000–500,000 IU daily, depending on severity and physician recommendation.
Familial Hypophosphatemia
- 40,000–80,000 IU daily with phosphate supplements.
- Dosage may be adjusted after the growth phase is complete.
How It Works
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a vital role in maintaining calcium and phosphate balance in the body. It helps improve calcium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, supports bone mineralization, and contributes to the development and maintenance of strong, healthy bones.
Contraindications
Do not use Hi-D IM Injection in the following situations:
- Hypercalcaemia (high blood calcium levels)
- Vitamin D toxicity
- Known hypersensitivity to Cholecalciferol or any component of the formulation
- Conditions associated with excessive calcium levels
Precautions
Use with caution in patients with:
- Elevated calcium or phosphate levels
- Heart disease
- Kidney disorders
Adequate calcium and magnesium intake is important during Vitamin D therapy. Vitamin D may pass into breast milk; therefore, breastfeeding mothers should use it only under medical supervision.
Possible Side Effects
Vitamin D3 is generally well tolerated when used as directed. However, excessive intake may lead to hypercalcaemia or calcium toxicity. Potential side effects include:
- Loss of appetite
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal discomfort or stomach pain
- Constipation
Drug Interactions
Use caution when taking Hi-D IM Injection with:
- Thiazide diuretics, calcium supplements, or phosphate supplements (may increase the risk of hypercalcaemia)
- Antiepileptic medicines such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone (may increase Vitamin D requirements)
- Rifampicin and isoniazid (may reduce Vitamin D effectiveness)
- Corticosteroids (may decrease Vitamin D activity)
- Digoxin and other cardiac glycosides
- Cholestyramine, colestipol, mineral oil, and orlistat (may reduce Vitamin D absorption)
- Ketoconazole
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and use only as directed by a healthcare professional.
