Fosfomycin/Fosamin is specifically indicated for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (acute cystitis) in women, caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis.
Fosfomycin exhibits bactericidal activity against a wide spectrum of aerobic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria commonly responsible for uncomplicated UTIs. Fosfomycin Trometamol, a phosphonic acid derivative, works by irreversibly inhibiting the enzyme enolpyruvyl transferase, a key catalyst in bacterial cell wall synthesis. This inhibition disrupts peptidoglycan formation, leading to bacterial death.
