Linezolid is a synthetic antibacterial agent belonging to the oxazolidinone class. It works by selectively inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 23S rRNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit. This prevents formation of the functional 70S initiation complex required for bacterial translation.
- Primarily bacteriostatic against enterococci and staphylococci
- Bactericidal against many streptococcal strains
- Not effective against Gram-negative infections
- Safety and efficacy beyond 28 days of therapy have not been established in controlled studies
