Oxycol is prescribed for the management of:
- Cholestasis (including pregnancy-associated jaundice)
- Viral Hepatitis
- Alcoholic Fatty Liver
- Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC)
- Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
- Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones
- Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
Oxycol lowers cholesterol saturation in bile, promoting gradual dissolution of gallstones. It reduces cholesterol secretion into bile and enhances bile acid secretion without decreasing phospholipids, thereby improving bile composition.
- Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), the active ingredient, is a naturally occurring bile acid with hepatoprotective and choleretic properties. Its key actions include:
- Reducing cholesterol absorption and suppressing hepatic cholesterol synthesis
- Modifying bile from supersaturated to unsaturated, preventing gallstone formation
- Facilitating removal of cholesterol from the gallbladder via liquid crystal complex formation
- Protecting liver cells and bile duct cells from toxic bile acids
- Enhancing bile secretion and preventing hepatocyte apoptosis
Absorption & Metabolism:
- Rapidly absorbed in the upper intestine (60–80%)
- Peak plasma levels in 30–150 minutes
- Conjugated with glycine or taurine in the liver and secreted in bile
- Minimal renal excretion
- Biological half-life: 3.5–5.8 days
