Description

Indications: Moxigen ophthalmic solution is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of various microorganisms, including aerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and Chlamydia trachomatis. It is also utilized as an intraocular antibiotic to prevent postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis.

Pharmacology: Moxifloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Eye Drops: Administer one drop into the affected eye(s) three times daily for 7 days.
  • Eye Ointment: Apply thinly and evenly to the affected eye(s) three times daily for the first two days, followed by twice daily for the next five days or as directed by a physician.
  • Intraocular Injection: Given as a 0.2-0.4 ml dose before ocular surgery, with the final dose determined by the doctor.

Interaction: Moxigen ophthalmic solution is unlikely to affect drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, CYP2D6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, or CYP1A2 based on in vitro studies.

Contraindications: Avoid use in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other quinolones, or to any components of the medication.

Side Effects: Common ocular side effects include conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, and ocular discomfort. Nonocular adverse events may include fever, increased cough, and rash.

Pregnancy & Lactation: Use during pregnancy should be considered only if benefits outweigh risks. Moxifloxacin excretion in human milk suggests caution during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings: Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. Patients should be examined with magnification if clinically indicated, and advised against wearing contact lenses during treatment.

Therapeutic Class: Ophthalmic antibacterial drugs.

Storage Conditions: Store below 25°C, protect from light, and keep out of children’s reach. Avoid touching the dropper tip to prevent contamination. Discard after one month of opening.
