3-C (Cefixime) is a third-generation, orally administered cephalosporin antibiotic effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It’s indicated for the treatment of infections such as:
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: e.g., otitis media, especially when other antibiotics are ineffective.
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: e.g., bronchitis.
- Urinary Tract Infections: including cystitis and pyelonephritis, where it has proven efficacy against common pathogens (e.g., Streptococcus pneumoniae, E. coli, Klebsiella, and H. influenzae).
Cefixime kills bacteria by disrupting their cell wall synthesis, and it remains effective in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes, making it useful against penicillin-resistant bacteria. About 40%-50% of the drug is absorbed, regardless of food intake.
