Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is converted in the liver to 25-hydroxy Vitamin D3 (Calcidiol) and subsequently in the kidneys to the active metabolite, Calcitriol.
Calcitriol acts by binding to Vitamin D receptors (VDRs) throughout the body, increasing intestinal calcium and phosphate absorption necessary for:

- Neuromuscular function
- Immune regulation
Being fat-soluble, Vitamin D3 is stored in adipose tissue and muscle, with a long biological half-life of approximately 50 days.
