Flucloxin contains Flucloxacillin, a penicillinase-resistant beta-lactam antibiotic with high activity against Gram-positive organisms. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
Flucloxacillin effectively blocks the action of transpeptidase, a crucial enzyme in the final stage of peptidoglycan cross-linking, which provides strength and stability to the bacterial cell wall. Due to its unique acyl side chain, the drug resists destruction by penicillinase enzymes.
Flucloxin is indicated for the treatment of a wide range of Gram-positive bacterial infections, especially those caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci.
