Severe allergic reaction
- Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that can begin very quickly and may be life-threatening.
Common Causes:
- Certain foods, especially peanuts
- Certain medications
- Stinging insects
- Exposure to latex
- Allergens such as pollens, dust particles, and other specific reasons that may vary among individuals
Affected Organs and Symptoms:
- Skin: Itching, hives, redness, swelling
- Nose: Sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose
- Mouth: Itching, swelling of the lips or tongue
- Throat: Itching, tightness, trouble swallowing, swelling of the back of the throat
- Chest: Shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, chest pain or tightness
- Heart: Weak pulse, passing out, shock
- Gastrointestinal Tract: Vomiting, diarrhea, cramps
- Nervous System: Dizziness or fainting
Treatment:
- A prompt injection of epinephrine is required.
- The patient needs to be hospitalized for proper treatment and monitoring.
Preventive Measures:
- Identify and avoid substances that trigger allergic reactions.
- Drink lots of fluids to help maintain overall health.
- Keep yourself away from dust and other allergens.
- Keep epinephrine injectors within reach for emergency situations.
- If the person has an epinephrine injector (such as an EpiPen), use it immediately.
- Contact emergency medical services or go to the nearest hospital immediately.
- Monitor their condition and be prepared to administer another dose of epinephrine if symptoms do not improve within 5-15 minutes, and if a second dose is available.
