Gavinil Max acts through a physical process, not systemic absorption.
After ingestion, it reacts rapidly with stomach acid to form a neutral pH gel (alginic acid “raft”) that floats on top of the stomach contents, forming a barrier to prevent reflux into the esophagus. This protective layer can persist for up to 4 hours and, in severe reflux, may enter the esophagus itself to soothe and protect its lining.
Gavinil Max is indicated for the symptomatic relief of indigestion or upset stomach (dyspepsia), particularly when caused by excess stomach acid (hyperacidity).
It effectively eases discomfort due to gastric acid and bile reflux into the esophagus, and is used in conditions such as:
- Acid reflux (gastric reflux)
- Inflammation of the esophagus due to reflux (reflux esophagitis)
- Heartburn, including that associated with hiatus hernia or pregnancy
- Bloating and gas (flatulence) are linked to acid reflux
- Regurgitation
- General epigastric (upper abdominal) and retrosternal (behind the breastbone) discomfort, where reflux is the underlying cause
