Itraconazole is used to treat fungal infections of the mouth, throat, toenails, fingernails, or lungs. It works by inhibiting the production of ergosterol (a main component of cell membranes of fungi). Thereby killing fungi and clearing the fungal infection.

It is effective against yeast and fungi infections because of its action against their cell membrane. Itraconazole blocks the formation of the cell membrane in fungi or yeast by inhibiting the enzyme required for cell wall synthesis, which ultimately leads to stopping the growth and death. Thus, it prevents the spread of infection.
