Description

Clonazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine class and possesses several therapeutic properties:

  • Anticonvulsant (anti-seizure)
  • Anxiolytic (anti-anxiety)
  • Sedative
  • Muscle relaxant

Its effects are primarily mediated through enhancement of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) activity, the brain’s major inhibitory neurotransmitter. Clonazepam increases the sensitivity of GABA receptors, resulting in greater inhibition of abnormal nerve activity.

Research also suggests an influence on serotonin pathways. Electroencephalographic (EEG) studies have shown that clonazepam can suppress various abnormal electrical discharges associated with epilepsy, making it effective in both generalized and focal seizure disorders.

Leptic contains clonazepam, a benzodiazepine medication used to treat certain anxiety disorders and seizure disorders.

Panic Disorder

Leptic is indicated for the treatment of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. Panic disorder is characterized by:

  • Recurrent unexpected panic attacks
  • Fear of future attacks
  • Persistent concern about the consequences of attacks
  • Behavioral changes related to panic episodes

Seizure Disorders

Leptic may be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic medications for:

  • Lennox-Gastaut syndrome
  • Akinetic seizures
  • Myoclonic seizures
  • Absence seizures (petit mal) that have not responded adequately to succinimide therapy

Although effective for short-term management, the long-term effectiveness of clonazepam beyond approximately 9 weeks has not been extensively studied. Patients receiving prolonged treatment should be regularly reassessed by their physician.

Leptic should not be used in patients with:

  • Hypersensitivity to clonazepam or other benzodiazepines
  • Significant liver disease
  • Acute narrow-angle glaucoma

Patients with controlled open-angle glaucoma may use the medication under medical supervision.
