Linezolid is a synthetic antibiotic belonging to the oxazolidinone class, effective against Gram-positive aerobic bacteria, some Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria, and certain Gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through a unique mechanism: it binds to the 23S ribosomal RNA of the 50S bacterial ribosomal subunit, blocking the formation of the 70S initiation complex necessary for bacterial protein production.
Bacteriostatic effect: against enterococci and staphylococci.
Bactericidal effect: against most streptococci strains.
Lizid is used to treat the following infections:
- Nosocomial pneumonia (hospital-acquired pneumonia)
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Complicated skin and skin structure infections, including diabetic foot infections without bone involvement (osteomyelitis)
- Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium infections
- Limitations: Lizid is not effective against Gram-negative infections. The safety and effectiveness of Lizid for treatments longer than 28 days have not been studied in controlled clinical trials.
