Opsonil 50 is used to manage the following conditions:
- schizophrenia and other psychoses (especially paranoid), mania and hypomania
- anxiety psychomotor agitation excitement, violent or dangerously impulsive behavior
- intractable hiccup
- nausea and vomiting of terminal illness (where other medicines have failed or are not available)
- schizophrenia and autism (in children)
Chlorpromazine works as an antagonist (blocking agent) on various post-synaptic receptors. It blocks dopaminergic receptors (D1, D2, D3, D4) and serotonergic receptors (5-HT1, 5-HT2) to help reduce symptoms of psychosis and mania, as well as have anxiolytic, antidepressant, and anti-aggressive properties. It also has effects on histaminergic receptors (sedation, antiemetic action), alpha-1/alpha-2 receptors (lowers blood pressure), and muscarinic receptors (causes anticholinergic symptoms). Additionally, chlorpromazine has mild antidepressant and antiparkinsonian effects due to its weak inhibition of dopamine reuptake.
