Description

Pantoprazole is used for the management of various acid-related gastrointestinal conditions, including:

  • Peptic ulcer disease (duodenal and gastric ulcers)
  • H. pylori infection (as part of combination therapy)
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with or without erosive esophagitis
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • Oesophagitis
  • Acid-related dyspepsia
  • NSAID-associated ulceration
  • Ulcers resistant to H2 receptor antagonists
  • Stress-related GI bleeding
  • Prophylaxis for acid aspiration during anesthesia

Pantoprazole is a substituted benzimidazole that inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells, blocking the final step of acid secretion. It suppresses both basal and stimulated gastric acid production.
