Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and the organic polymer povidone, which enhances its properties compared to elemental iodine. This polymerization allows for a prolonged germicidal effect as it slowly releases elemental iodine, resulting in lower toxicity. It exhibits rapid microbicidal activity against a wide spectrum of pathogens, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts, and is also sporicidal. It remains effective even in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water, without staining.
Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential iodine absorption affecting the fetal thyroid. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers Povidone Iodine generally compatible with breastfeeding; however, consultation with a physician is advised. Regular use of Gargle & Mouthwash and Surgical Scrub should also be avoided in pregnant and lactating women. The safety of Povidone eye drops in pregnancy and lactation has not been established, and their use is not recommended unless necessary.

Prophylactic Use:
- To prevent microbial contamination in burns, incisions, and other skin lesions
- For degerming skin in hyperalimentation, umbilical area, or circumcision
- To prevent infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds, promoting healing.
Solution:
- For prevention and treatment of surface infections and degerming skin, mucous membranes, and hyperalimentation procedures.
- For seborrhea management.
- For preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and cleaning of hospital operating rooms and equipment.
- For preparing operative sites, including vaginal areas.
- For disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions.
- As a prophylactic anti-infective in various clinical settings.
- For postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infections.
- In treating oral moniliasis (thrush) and bacterial or mycotic skin infections, including decubitus and stasis ulcers.
- As a preoperative oral swab.
Gargle & Mouthwash:
- A pleasantly flavored solution for:
- Treating acute mucosal infections of the mouth and throat.
- Maintaining oral hygiene before, during, and after dental and oral surgery.
Surgical Scrub:
- A golden surfactant solution that forms a rich lather, used as an antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative washing by surgeons and operating room staff.
Powder:
- For topical application in treating superficial wounds, minor cuts, burns, abrasions, and lacerations, aiding in infection prevention.
Ophthalmic Solution:
- Used for the symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions, including keratoconjunctivitis sicca, and as a substitute for tear fluid in cases of unstable tear film or insufficient eye surface moisture.
