Description

Adults

  • CKD-related anaemia (non-dialysis): 50–100 IU/kg IV or SC, 3 times per week. Start if Hb <10 g/dL. Adjust to keep Hb <11 g/dL.
  • CKD-related anaemia (dialysis): Same dose, IV route preferred.
  • Chemotherapy-induced anaemia: 150 IU/kg IV/SC, 3 times weekly OR 40,000 IU SC once weekly until chemo ends.
  • HIV-related anaemia (zidovudine use): 100 IU/kg IV/SC, 3 times weekly if endogenous erythropoietin <500 mU/mL.

Pre-surgical patients (blood loss risk):

  • 300 IU/kg SC daily for 15 days (10 days pre-surgery, day of surgery, and 4 days post-surgery), OR
  • 600 IU/kg SC weekly, given 3 weeks before surgery and on the day of surgery.

Children

  • CKD-related anaemia (>1 month old): 50 IU/kg IV/SC, 3 times weekly. IV preferred for dialysis.
  • Prematurity-related anaemia: 25–100 IU/kg SC, 3 times weekly OR 200–400 IU/kg every 24–48 hrs for 2–6 weeks.
  • HIV-related anaemia (8 months–17 yrs): 50–400 IU/kg IV/SC, 2–3 times weekly.
  • Chemotherapy-related anaemia (5–18 yrs): 600 IU/kg IV once weekly (max 40,000 IU).

Recogen Prefilled Syringe 3000 IU is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) that promotes the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. It is mainly prescribed for treating anaemia linked to chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy, HIV therapy, and in certain surgical settings to minimize the need for blood transfusions. The medicine is administered either subcutaneously (under the skin) or intravenously (into a vein), depending on your doctor’s advice.

Erythropoietin, the active component, regulates erythropoiesis (red blood cell formation). It stimulates differentiation and proliferation of erythroid precursor cells in the bone marrow, accelerates the release of reticulocytes into circulation, and promotes haemoglobin synthesis—thereby correcting low haemoglobin levels. Recombinant human erythropoietin (epoetin alfa/beta) mimics the natural hormone.
